Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2014

Welcome to our Christmas edition of BULLieve

In this is what will be our last edition now till after Christmas and more than likely till next year, we have packed quite a bit in this edition, we hope you enjoy reading.

Recap from The Provident Stadium.

Spotlight on 1863.

Focus on Kabuki Syndrome,

Chat with a Bradford lad and Darts Player Joe Cullen.

Recap,

The good news still keeps rolling out of Odsal and not a ball has been kicked yet, Marc Green has certainly kept his foot on the pedal ensuring that the long term stability of the club remains his priority. With the launch of the new 1863 membership, the members day was a huge success, players were involved to hand out the special packs associated with the membership, and the day had speeches from Jimmy lowes and players alike.
The membership has proved to be a huge success and has now passed the 2,100 milestone, there are
around 10 weeks till the new season begins and hopes are high that the initial 4,000 target can be reached. With the membership itself there are some great benefits and deals to be had, recent deals have been savings on photography and teeth whitening with many more offers to be announced on a weekly basis from the bulls.

It has also just been revealed that you are now able to join the 1863 Members club for just £60, this has been named The Kick Off membership, as a member you still receive the exclusive 1863 pack, discount at 100's of businesses, £5 off a replica shirt, entry to a match of your choice and invites to exclusive member only events and e-mails. This is a fantastic opportunity to show your support for the Bulls if you wish to join you can do so by Clicking here

One major talking point from the 1863 members day was the all new Away strip for 2015.

The strip is nothing like we have had in recent years and it has gone down a storm with the fans who can now pre order the shirt for only £10 by CLICKING HERE
You can  also view the official shirt launch video HERE

The final announcement of the 1863 members day was to be the captain for 2015, many names were being thrown around and one that came to light quite a lot was Lee Gaskell after last seasons stand out performances. But the choice was to be Chev Walker, Chev has a huge range of experience from the last 16 years to pull from and hopefully guide us through a successful 2015.

Chev thanked fans and everyone else who sent him messages of support and said he has a " head down, arse up " approach to his work and "if its something worth doing, then to do it right".

Spotlight on 1863.

Linking in with our hugely successful 1863 membership, we thought it was time to take a look at where it all began and how.
Prior to 1863 a very crude form of football had been played in England, the rules varied tremendously from region to region. As the 1860's began to unfold, two distinct sets of playing rules began to emerge. One was where the ball was kicked around on the floor with the hands not being used at all, the other allowed for the ball to be caught in the air but to be immediately to be placed on the ground.

In the winter of 1863 a young gentleman named Oates Ingham who owned the Lingfield Dyeworks on Thornton Road in Bradford decided, along with some friends and associates from Framham College, to form their own football club. The rules were that a player was allowed to catch the ball by a means of a fair catch, but it meant they could not run with it, this left the player in question open to attack. Under the rules of that time, a player running with the ball could be repeatedly kicked about the shins by his opponent until he dropped the ball.

Like the now famous moment when William Webb Ellis in 1923 whilst at Rugby School, picked up the ball and ran with it, this feature of the game became more common during the 1860's which began the gradual move to what we now know as Rugby Union.
At this time Bradford was one of the fastest growing cities in Europe, mainly due to its association with the wool trade, it only seemed fitting that they should form a sporting club of some type. In fact they were the first Yorkshire side to do so, apart from themselves the only other clubs that had been formed were Liverpool and Edinburgh Academicals both in 1857 and then Blackheath in 1858.
Bradford's first home game was on the Horton Cricket Club Ground on All Saints Road near to where ST. Lukes hospital now stands. They only remained here for 2 years before being asked to leave by the committee, because of the damage they caused to the ground. They had several "grounds" in the early start including a piece of open land on Laisterbridge lane although this was very brief, then a move to the Manningham area on North park Road, eventually to settle on land which is now peel park, and then to a disused piece of land in the Girlington area.

Apart from trying to find a settled venue, the side in the early days found it difficult to arrange fixtures, with very few clubs who played there types of rules, most games between 1863-1868 were a Captain's side V a Secretary's side or a game against a university formation.
The number in a team could vary greatly and up to a total of 30 a side, but in most cases settled around the 20 mark. Oates Ingham decided that if the club was going to progress then it needed much firmer foundations. With this in mind in 1866 the Bradford Rugby Club was officially brought into being.

By 1874 it emerged that a better ground was required to sustain the clubs growth, so for the 6th time in 11 years it was moving time again, and over to Apperley Bridge. The first season at there new "home" was highly successful in the 1874/75 season by wining every single match and not conceding any points at all. Although the English Rugby union was formed in 1871 it did not bring the team any silverware as a league format had not yet been introduced. The E.R.U was basically formed to finalise the set of rules all teams would play under, and each individual club were left to arrange their own fixtures.

Whilst at Apperley Bridge during the 1870's came a threat to there existence they had been there for 5 years, when in 1879 talks of a rival side in the city put everything in doubt, Bradford Cricket, Athletic and football club had been formed and built a new ground at Park Avenue, this was in easy reach of the City Centre, and had a railway link running alongside the ground, it was thought that the Bradford Public would only travel to the nearest venue. Bradford Rugby Club voiced their opinions and anger at these formations and pointed out that the Rugby club were in danger of folding, eventually talks were entered and meant that the Rugby club would move once again over to Park Avenue. There first match at P.A was in 1880 on 25th September when they lost to Bradford Rangers, in the end the move turned out to be fruitful as it brought more recognition to the club and it was a fine venue and attracted better sides such as Harlequins, Hull, Dewsbury, Salford, Rochdale, Halifax to name but a few playing on the English Rugby Union Code.

In the final decade of the E.R.U Bradford became one of the most feared sides in the country, especially on there own ground. The calibre of players that played for the club were some of the best around at the time.
In late 1894 a dispute took place from the rugby players stating their anger at having to take time off work to play for the club, by breaking time from work made the pay packets short and wanted some restitution to the situation. Over the next few months meetings took place and often bitter arguments were not rare to be heard, after several meetings the clubs involved including Bradford broke the deadlock over the dispute when on August 28th 1895 at the George Hotel in Huddersfield they decided to resign from the E.R.U and set up their own independent ruling body under the name of Northern Rugby Union. 22 of the North's main sides had finally had enough of southern ruling and attitude and decided to go it alone Rugby League was born. It must be noted that the Northern name was not added on until 1907 and it was to identify that Rugby football was still being played in the city.

Focus on Kabuki Syndrome.

We have a very good reason for wishing to focus on this very rare syndrome, Tom (one of the writer's) son Stuart has this extremely rare condition which took some time to diagnose and Stuart is a huge Bradford Bulls fan. We hope that we can raise some awareness of this very rare Genetic condition.
Kabuki syndrome is a disorder that affects many parts of the body. It is quite rare affecting approximately 1 in 32,000 newborns. Identified in 1981 by two Japanese groups it is named Kabuki syndrome because the facial resemblance of affected individuals with white Kabuki makeup a Japanese traditional theatrical form. Children with this syndrome are called Kabuki kids or KKS.
Stuart has these characteristics, development delay, hearing problems, speech problems, weak muscle tone, small head size, cleft palate, eye problems (Duanes syndrome), a wide variety of other health problems can occur with people having Kabuki syndrome.
Stuart with our very own CEO Robbie Hunter-Paul at a fixture this season

One of the causes for Kabuki is when there are mutations in the KMT2D gene, it is inherited in an way that one copy of the altered gene in each cell is sufficient to cause the disorder, there are other causes too but we don't to go into too much technical detail please if you wish to learn more have a  google on the subject and have a read. It took us a while for us a family to have this diagnosed because of its rarity, but even as a child we knew something just wasn't quite right. He's a happy lad all in all loves his Bulls and most importantly his Steam engines at the N.Y.M.R. We asked Stuart a few questions about Bulls and here is his little chat with BULLieve.

Q. So Stuart we have to ask you, this you been going to Bulls now for a while with Mum, Dad and brother what's your favourite part of going and who is your favourite player.

A. My favourite player is Matty Blythe, I always enjoy it when the Bulls win, because Dad isn't grumpy then in the car on the way home.

Q. What has been your most Favourite moment of watching the Bulls.

A. When I was a Mascot and got to walk out onto the pitch with all the players. (If anyone can recall it was the first home game of 2013 against Wakefield and Stuart wouldn't leave the pitch) I also enjoyed meeting the players after a match that was cool.
Q. So Stuart last one, I can see your itching to get back to your drawing, are the Bulls going to get back into super league next year and what are you looking forward most.

A. I'm looking to forward to seeing Bullman again, and yes I hope they can get promoted, i'm  just hoping they win a lot of games as Dad wont be grumpy and miserable when they lose. And we can also go see Steam Trains too.

Thanks for your very valuable time Stuart much appreciated indeed. Well we hoped you enjoyed that insight into Kabuki, he is a lovely lad despite his few issues but he never complains and just gets on with everything day to day. There is actually only 1 UK charity that supports families affected by Kabuki. Should you wish to take a look at there website please do so by Clicking here

Chat with Bradford lad and Darts Player Joe Cullen.

When we first heard the draw for the Darts World Championships, one of our stand out fixtures for us was Joe Cullen to face "Mighty" Michael Van Gerwen, ok so he's not a Bulls fan but he is a Rugby League fan and a Bradford lad, we asked Joe if he would speak to us, and very graciously has taken a bit of time out to speak to BULLieve. We wont hold it against him that he is a Wigan fan though, and Joe has beaten some of the best in the World of Darts including his first round opponent, to mention a few the, 16 time World Champion Phil "The Power" Taylor, Raymond van Barneveld, Andy Hamilton, Dave Chisnall and The "Bull" Terry Jenkins.

Joe first burst onto the scene in 2008 when qualifying for the UK Open, he then quit his job as a postman in 2009 to concentrate on his Darts Career. The world championships have not been kind to Joe over the years and has never progressed any further than the 1st round,  he came close in 2011 but lost out 3~2 to Terry Jenkins lets hope this year Joe can finally get that monkey off his back and go further.

Hi Joe thanks for talking to us so here are a few questions we have put together for you, we wish you all the very best for this years 2014 championships.

Q. How did your Darts Career all begin, and what did it feel like that first time to win at a tournament.

A. I really enjoyed it, originally my dad entered me in the qualifier but I actually didn't know what I was qualifying for.!!! It was a real buzz my 1st time and a moment I wont forget.

Q. How does it feel to stand up on stage with Phil Taylor, the guy is a legend, how are your nerves and do you think well might as well go home now, but you have beat him and how does that feel.

A. If I cant get up for a game against the greatest ever, then your in the wrong game!! Its a strange one really, your nervous to start with, then relaxed in the middle, then if your in with a chance of beating Phil the nerves just come back, which is completely normal. Its an unbelievable feeling beating him though.

Q. You start this years tournament with a huge game against the current World Champion, but you have beat him before is there any secret or do you just play your own game.

A.I have beaten Mike a fair few times, including the last time we met, which I won. There is no real strategy against mike, if you try tactics eg: slowing him down etc then your taking away the standard of your own performance.

Q. Moving onto Rugby now Joe you are a huge Wigan fan, how do you feel about the Bulls demise from once a great side now into the Championship and there well documented demise can they bounce back.

A. Yeah I'm a big Wigan fan mad, I  go to most home games. The Bulls is a funny one for me, I used to really hate them which was probably due to the amount of success they had. But now I don't really dislike or like them. I hope they get back into super league next season though, they're too good to be down there.

Q. You have a long way to go yet with your career, but so far what are your highlights, and if you could give any advice to anyone just starting out in the game what would it be and what to do.

A. My biggest highlight is beating Phil Taylor. Especially as he was dominating all the time, Qualifying for the world matchplay too. Great place to play darts. I would advise youngsters to always believe you can beat anyone, no one has a god given right to always win. And if your serious about the game, dedicate yourself as much as possible, practice wise, time wise, everything.

Q. Going back to Rugby League Joe, which team will stand out for you this coming season and do you think that the change of promotion and relegation will improve the game further.

A. I genuinely think Wigan are the team to beat this year, with Joel Tomkins coming back last year . and Mossop this year, we are starting to look really strong everywhere. Matty smith has come into his own and one of your former players, John Bateman was outstanding last year.
I'm glad they changed it back (Relegation/Promotion) it was getting a bit farcical.

Joe we thank you so much for your time to talk to us we could have chatted all night but we appreciate how busy you are, we sincerely hope you have a great time at the World Championships and we wish you all the very best good luck Joe and thank you.

Looking back at 2014 with Glenn Morrison.

Welcome to this edition of BULLieve. In this edition we bring you,

Season Recap of 2014,

Let there be light

An interview with  former Bradford Bull & current Dewsbury Coach Glenn Morrison,

Events taking place at Odsal up to Christmas,

Mentions.

Season Recap of 2014.

Was 2014 a year to remember or a year to forget? In some ways both we suppose but despite losing our Super League status for the first time, all we can hear coming out of Odsal is positive, vibrant news. Season tickets are selling well and look on course to hit the 2,000 mark before the end of the year. We have decided to have a brief look back at 2014 and yes we are very sorry we do have to mention the defeat at Wigan.

Pre season wasn't the best of starts despite beating Hull Fc 30~18 in our first outing but that's about as good as it got, a youthful Bulls side travelled a little up the road to Dewsbury only to be beaten 38~4 with James Saltonsall scoring the Bulls only try. Finally Castleford Tigers visited Odsal and little did many know then that they really were the surprise package of 2014. Bradford were taken apart 66~10. At this point rumours began to spread that the uncertainty of Bradford's future was looking unstable, surely not again. Fans favourite Jarrod Sammut departed as did Gareth Carvell before the first fixture and the fans started to worry that could administration loom once more.

So the season began with a loss to Castleford Tigers but soon hope returned and Bradford recorded back to back victories against Wakefield and London respectively but that was just about as good as it got and to add to our fears already, administration was confirmed with a 6 point deduction. Nick Scruton was sold to Wakefield Wildcats on a 1 year deal but at least the Bulls reduced the points deficit to -2 with a victory over also struggling London Broncos.

Ourselves at BULLieve also decided on something a little different and entered the world of media, Tom gained access to the press areas at the KC stadium and KC lightstream stadium gaining a real insight into the press world and some valuable experience.

March and April were gloomy months on the field, despite the arrival of our new owner Marc Green who had fought off other bids from Mandy Koucash, Park avenue and Richard lamb respectively but the Bulls were rooted firmly in the bottom 2 places in Super league. Out of all the games the Bulls did make one record sadly it was not one we particularly wanted and that the loss to Wigan warriors of 6~84 was Bradford's heaviest defeat in the history so far, after the ashes had finally settled from that defeat, a tough Catalan side visited Odsal in the Challenge cup, surprisingly to all Bradford managed to grind out the win and this seemed to rejuvenate the Bulls and with Warrington  next up and the worse was feared again but somehow Bradford  hung on to a 34~28 victory. Sadly that was a good as it got as the Bulls lost there next 3 with one being another hammering of 50~0 to eventual champions St Helens.

Hope was once again restored against Wakefield Wildcats and with a faltering Salford following the
next week hopes were high, sadly the result did not become of what was expected and ultimately resulting in Francis Cummins and Marcus St Hilaire losing there positions, it could be said it was harsh on Francis who had worked for nothing under the previous administration with Mick Potter and under difficult circumstances again with limited finance, and only being able to bring in loan players for a large amount of time however the feeling was a change was needed.

The Bulls were now on the hunt for a new coach with many names being mentioned, but it was
Matt Diskin who then took temporary charge of the squad against a visiting Hull Kr who had Nilled the Bulls in the previous fixture, and it didn't get much better either with a further loss 44~18 and in front of the sky cameras too. With so many names being thrown into the Coaching hat it emerged that former Bull, Jimmy Lowes was returning to Odsal to take charge. At this point Jimmy was determined for the Bulls to stay in SL, and the legal team were still battling the 6 point deduction everything seemed to be positive again despite our precarious position.

Despite Jimmy's return results still didn't go the way he wanted in the first few rounds and then it was confirmed with defeat to Huddersfield Giants and the board deciding not pursue there 6 point deduction that relegation was confirmed, and for the first time in 41 years Bradford would be plying there trade in the 2nd tier of English rugby league. Despite the losses it was clear to see that hard work off the field in training was paying off, then amazingly when all the Bulls supporters fear the worse Wigan become Jimmy's first scalp, Leeds and Hull followed and at last there was a little something to cheer. Bradford lost the further 2 games but finished on a high with beating our fellow relegated team London Broncos.

With pre season training well under way we are sure Jimmy will have the Bulls fired up and ready for our opening fixture against Leigh Centurions on Sunday 15th February. Before of which the Bulls are to face Castleford Tigers for Andy Lynch's testimonial, 11th January (k.o 2:30) at Wheldon road. Huddersfield Giants visit Odsal on the 18th January also on January 25th Bradford square up against
our bitter rivals Leeds Rhinos in Jamie peacock's testimonial tickets can be purchased for all the
above by ringing 08448 711 940. Or by Clicking Here

Let there be light.

Floodlights these days are taken for granted, we don't think twice when we go off to watch matches held on evening there lit most times by the time the light begins to dim, but did you know that Bradford Northern were the first club from either Association Football or Rugby league/union to have floodlights in use outside of London, a few grounds had some sort of lighting system in the London area and were used for various sporting events. But it was Bradford Northern to install them and use them for a full Rugby league match on October 31st 1951. In all honesty the system used was very primitive compared to todays pylons that stand high in all 4 corners, it was just a set of high powered lamps fixed along the front edge of the stand which then stood at Odsal, there were also a series of wooden poles which were placed at regular intervals around the pitch which carried a single floodlight.

On the night a crowd of around 29,000 gathered into a somewhat gloomy and dark Odsal stadium, as kick off approached there were no signs of the lights, many of the crowd thought that the game would be abandoned. Unknown to the crowd the Northern and New Zealand players had already taken to the pitch in the darkness and taken up there positions on the field in anticipation of the game to begin. At
the given time a command was made and all the lights were turned on, to reveal the players who were cheered and clapped as the Odsal pitch was covered in artificial light for the very first time. The match was a huge success and certainly became the talking point of a spectacle the crowd had witnessed. The fact that Northern had also won 13~8 added to the hugely successful event and didn't go unnoticed either.

It should also be mentioned that in the following year Odsal held a Floodlit Cricket match on 17th September 1952, the matted wicket was laid along the playing area so each wicket was parallel to the posts. Around 3,000 turned up to watch the match on a very cold night, the organisers had hoped for more but possibly cricket on a rugby pitch put off the connoisseur of cricket or maybe just the thought of the inclimate weather we all love about Odsal.

Interview with Former Bull and Current  Dewbury Rams Head Coach Glenn Morrison.

Hi Glenn thanks for agreeing to the interview I've got some history here for yourself ,you played for Paramatta eels, Balmain Tigers, North Queensland, Bradford Bulls and Wakefield trinity wildcats before being forced to retire in 2011 due to a shoulder injury, despite this Glenn, you stayed on at Wakefield as assistant coach. In 2001 you were named the cowboys player of the year. It was in January 2007 you were appointed Bradford Bulls vice captain by then coach Steve McNamara. It was the same year where you were included In the Super League dream team, you also had a sweep of awards as the T&A player of the year, Players' player of the year and Supporters player of the year titles in 2007. You spent 3 seasons with the Bulls before moving onto Wakefield for the 2010 campaign. you had a very successful first year and signed for a further year. You also received the Wakefield Wildcats Man of Steel awards both seasons you played there. You also played in the first Exiles v England game, also just missing out on the Man of the Match award, You went on to be assistant coach for the same tournament the year you were forced to retire.

So Glenn here are a few questions for you,

Q. You have had a varied career playing in both NRL & Super league and now in a coaching capacity at Dewsbury Rams, throughout your playing career you must have experienced many Highs and lows, what was and remains your most memorable occasion?  And also what was your lowest point.

A .I think with every player their highest point is making there 1st team debut, mine is the same. I will never forget it, I was 18 playing at the S.F.S against Sydney Roosters and had to mark Brad Fittler.

My lowest point was getting the injury that made me retire before I was ready to. I would have loved to go out on my own terms.

Q .In your early playing days who were your idols and who did you look up to for inspiration and what motivated you to become a successful Rugby league player.

A .My idol was Wayne Pearce, I was a Balmain Tiger fan, my dad played there, I just loved his desire and work rate and tried to model my game around that. I was lucky to have him as my first team coach at the tigers.

Q. We all know that you have to stick to a strict diet and training regime as a player what was yours and did you stick to it.

A. My diet and fitness have always been good. I was never an Andrew Johns type player. I had to make sure I was the fittest in the team so I could do as much work on the park as possible as that's what my job was. On my days off I would do extra training and ate perfect so I could do my job for the team.

Q. If you had never made it as a professional RL player what else would you have done.

A. I studied and was a police officer for 18months before I turned professional with Rugby league. I have also got diplomas in private investigation, corporate risk management and Government fraud, so possibly one of those areas.

Q. We all know how hard you train and work to be match fit, but in your opinion who has been your toughest opponent you came across while playing RL.

A. Playing for 16 years I have played with and against some very tough players. Gordon Talis, Cement Gillespy, Adrian Morley and that's to name just a few.

Q. From playing in the NRL then coming to Super league did you feel there was a gap between the 2 competitions, I mean as in intensity of the game the general speed of the game and strategies used.

A. When I came to the Super league I found it to be much more of an attacking orientated style of game. You could win a game 50-40 and everyone was happy. In Australia I lost a Grand final eliminator 6-4 and it was 3 goals to 2, no tries Australia was more defence orientated and physical.

Q. As fans we know the disappointment of losing and trudging away from a match depressed to high heaven and then of course every fan becomes a coach and know exactly what to do but joking aside, how does it effect the players and yourself as an individual. Also now in a coaching capacity how do you feel after a result doesn't go your way.

A. As a player I went into every game to win and I am just the same as a coach. We played Wigan Warriors in Challenge cup last season and even at half time we believed we could do it. Unfortunately being part timers against full time players they got us in the last 20 min. Everyone who plays or coaches want to win, not just make up numbers and when you lose it hurts a lot. As a coach I work harder and look for that extra edge for the team the next week so it doesn't happen again.

Q. Is there anyone from your playing days that you still keep in contact with, also if you had not been successful in Rugby league what other plans or job would have taken on.

A. The best part of Rugby League, or any team sport is that you make friends for life. You take that field ready for battle and know your mates have got your back. Once you have that you have friends for life. I keep in contact with as many past team mates as I can.

Q. What's your relationship like with Roger Ram he seems to be quite a determined fella, and very passionate about his team.

A. Roger Ram is outstanding for our club. There is nothing he wont do to help out. A real character.

Q. As we all know this is Bulls first stint outside of Super league, how do you feel they will fare in the championship, obviously you have your aspirations for Dewsbury in promotion but who do see being promoted to Super league this season and can Bradford become the dominant force they were in the early SL era.

A. I really hope the Bulls bounce back into Super league straight away as that's where the club belongs. I love the club, I moved my family half way around the world to play for them. I believe once they do get back into SL they have the right people in the right places now to make sure they grow consistently back to a major force on and off the pitch. Will they get straight back up next season? Well its going to be harder than everyone thinks as there will be 4 or 5 other Championships wanting the same result, and 4 super league teams fighting to stay up. It will be an exciting year and i'm sure the Bulls will be doing all they can to get the result they want.

Q. With the 4 nations having just taken place and once again England not quite getting the results do you feel there is still a gap in the international game.

A. I feel that England were unlucky in both of there games not to have won and made the final. I feel there is a bigger pool of players from Australia to New Zealand to pick from. When you think Australia had 11 players who weren't playing and they still put a squad together they did it shows the amount of depth. The structures and pathways in NRL are stronger right down to under 15's and amateur level. I think the new system next season will help with depth and quality of players in the game and i'm really looking forward to it.

Q. What would be your advice to any youngster wanting to make it big in the game.

A. Basically train hard and have fun at the same time.

Q. Finally Glenn, we must mention your lovely wife Robyn who people often say is the real Miss Congeniality, how do you both inspire each other to get the best results, and to stay motivated.

A. Robyn has been a real rock for me. She sacrificed a lot moving around different states in Australia and then to England. She can never sit still and she was the one who pushed me to study while I played to have something to fall back on.. She has started and built the biggest cheerschool in Yorkshire winning numerous national titles, she has also won Mrs Universe UK, Mrs World UK and Mrs World Fitness International. Meaning she has had to travel to numerous countries over the last few years but i'm right behind her. Its now my time to support her and give her every chance for success as she did with me in my career.

Thank you very much for your time Glenn, its been fantastic talking with you and we do appreciate how busy you are its been a great insight. All the best for the new season and our very best wishes to your wife Robyn too, Thank you.

BULLieve managed to catch up with him and have a few words to see if he was hoping that the Bulls may come looking.

Q. Hi Shaun, we have seen your recent interview and just a couple of questions for you really, are you hoping that after your recent interview in the press that the Bulls may spark an interest in your services once more .

A. NO! I very much doubt they will be come again asking for my services the coach in charge now, knows what he wants for the future.

Q. You mention your fitness in the interview how bad was that when you were not playing full time and not on a regular training routine and how are things now with your fitness.

A. Yes I went really unfit  and put lots of weight on, I've lost it all again now though , we have a really good conditioning coach at Batley and training is getting tough again.

Q. Any message for the Bulls fans ahead of our new campaign in the Championship.

A. Just stick with them and I'm sure they will be back in no time.

Just make sure that you all bring your Ainscough banners next season lol. seriously all the best, and Happy Birthday too from BULLieve.

Away from Rugby League for a moment our thoughts also must go to Australia Cricketer Phillip Hughes who sadly passed away this morning, it really was a terrible tragedy, and freak accident too despite wearing the necessary protection was fatally injured after the ball struck him at the top of the neck causing the injury, our thoughts also go to the bowler Sean Abbott and sincerely hope he his receiving the counselling he requires at this time.

Weekly Recap

Is it February yet??? Well we don't know about you but here at BULLieve we cant wait for next season to get underway, everything seems positive and the news out of Odsal is steady at the moment.  The players are still training hard according to Jimmy who is not letting them switch off and keeping the boys in shape ready for next season, the players have been back in  training before Saints had lifted the Super league trophy.

A huge congratulations goes to our very own Danny Addy who has just helped Scotland clinch a spot in the next 4 nations after winning the inaugural European Championships.

Sam Burgess is back in British Rugby after a stint in the NRL well we all knew he wouldn't be going to Bath really!!!!

We are sure all will work out for "Slammin" Sam, we wish him all the best and hope he is a huge success but lets be honest I'm sure though you would look better in a Bulls shirt. In the meantime from us all at BULLieve good luck.

So we need to ask did Ryan Hall score the TRY??? All the pundits have said its a Try its up to you now.

England put in a magnificent performance, the first 40 mins England moved the ball around subsequently moving Australia's defence and tiring them out, sadly in the 2nd half England were a bit too conservative and tried to play it safe, one thing you cant do against the Australians. The final is anyone's for the taking after the results from the weekend. England must beat New Zealand by 10 points or more to guarantee a place in the 4 nations final. Maybe that sounds simple but NZ have a 100% record in the tournament. Good luck England were right behind you.

We also have several interviews lined up too from former players at the Bulls. Wayne Godwin, Glenn Morrison, Stuart Reardon, and hopefully many more to feature in the very near future. If any of you have any questions you would like to ask any of the guys please ask us on our facebook page Bradford Bulls BULLieve or via our twitter handle @BullsBULLieve. We look forward to hearing from you all.

Bradford Northern and The 1st World War

On August 12th 1914 it was officially announced that War had been declared between England and Germany, on the 16th August the Rugby league held a meeting to discuss what should happen during this time of War. Most felt that the war would be over by Christmas through negotiations and  the English Forces would be too strong against the Germans to last out any longer, so the decision was taken to that the 1914/15 season would go ahead without any alterations being made to the fixtures.
Before he first round of fixtures took place on the 5th September Northern had lost 10 of its first team to the war already, these had all been reservists and were immediately called up on declaration of war. Suddenly a whole bunch of local youngsters were thrust into the first team, which proved to be disastrous as Northern only managed 4 defeats and a draw up to October. With most of the three quarter line non existent the club tried to bridge the gap by bringing back a former player from Hull kr, T.Surman but now 31 years old no difference was really made, as the youngsters were below his class and failed to react to his direction on the park.

With the war 2 months old and most clubs experiencing difficulties, several clubs called the league for the season to be abandoned Hull kr, Leeds, Hunslet, Wigan were all experiencing some sort of financial hardship, Saint Helens reported they had only taken £10 in season tickets compared to the  year before of £426. Nearly every club had a story to tell Northern were hit hard on the gate as men were joining the war effort and some stayed away on moral grounds that if you were fit enough for rugby, you were fit enough to fight. It was decided that on the meeting on the 20th October that the league would continue as it started but with a 25% reduction in players wages to help the clubs.

Northern finished the year of 1914 on a low as they were forced to field a makeshift side against Hull on 28th December and were hammered 65-0 against a also heavily depleted Hull side, Northern were also hammered earlier on December 12th by Huddersfield 60-7.

Northern continued to sign players into the 2nd half of the season but as one seemed to sign another went off to war, form did slightly improve a victory came in some unusual circumstances against Runcorn who were also in a very similar situation to Northern but were having a bit of a worse time of it as they had spent all season rooted to the bottom of the table. With 12 losses and 1 win from Bradford's travels Runcorn managed to field a reasonably strong side as some of there men were home on leave, some predicted a Cheshire win and there 1st victory. Bradford went into the game with only12 men, as 1 of the players had missed the train at Bradford, then during the match lost another to fighting and were down to 11 but managed to get the victory of a 13-7 win.

Debts began to mount and the club found itself in a financial crisis, many other clubs were facing the same problems, it was then realised by the league that the war would not be over quickly and the effects were having serious consequences on the game, the decision was made and all competitive fixtures were suspended and the structure to take an amateur format.  Clubs were informed to arrange there own "friendly" fixtures. With over 1,500 players in the forces it was also decided to bring down the age limit to 18 years old before anyone could play for a club.

The war was now beginning to drag on and several clubs faced similar positions to Northern, ultimately extinction. No money coming in, ground falling into decay and disrepair each season under war time conditions pushed the club further and further to the point of no return. As like most clubs Bradford relied on local talent to take the field for them it was either this or turn up short and hope the opposing team could lend them someone to compete. By 1917 the age limit had been scrapped and players could play for any club they wished providing there own club did not have a match arranged, sometimes a club could have 7-8 "guest" players in the side just to fulfil a fixture. Bradford Northern were no exception to this. occasions there would be a forward in the backs and it was very rare any player would be in the same position twice, as seasons went on it got worse 7 different full backs, 15 players tried on the wings, 11 different players deployed at stand off, and 9 different scrum halves.

December 8th 1917 Northern have a fixture against Dewsbury, the team is all picked 2 days before and ready to go, all of a sudden the squad is left in shreds as the players that were home on leave were suddenly ordered to report back to there units, others cried off because of illness. Northern went to Dewsbury with just 6 men, their side was made up of reserves from Dewsbury, but at one stage it looked as though Bradford would take up the offer of a wounded soldier from the crowd who had offered his services if they could not raise a full squad. March 31st 1917 at Batley, 4 Batley players in there side plus one each from Dewsbury and Leigh, similar a week later at York having to use 3 York players, 1 from Hunslet, Keighley and Bramley to raise a full squad. Northern also often loaned out there own players but did themselves dis-service on one occasion by loaning 2 of there better players to Halifax, of which Halifax won the match 7-0 and the loaned Northern player being Man of the Match (Craven) the players being Craven and Middleton. Bradford also used others ploys to field a full side by fielding some of there former players who were now retired.

1916/17 became a crunch season for Northern the club were only existing on a week to week basis, the struggle to survive became at the very beginning of the season, the opening matches were to take place on 2nd September, Northern notified there opponents for this and the date 7 days later that they would not be able to field a side, truth be had there was no money at all to pay players and taking part in fixtures looked very remote. Northern did survive till the end by donations and some help from the League, at the beginning of the following season there were nervous moments but public donations and directors dipping into there own pockets enabled them to survive the storm.

On 9th February 1918 Bradford played a fixture against all the odds in the grip of winter on a Brighouse pitch covered in 8 inches of snow, some rough markings were made out in the snow and play went ahead but amazingly only 9 people watched the whole affair as it was thought that the match would not go ahead the 9 being 3 press, 2 officials from each club and 2 ground staff. The game was played in blizzard conditions but was eventually abandoned after 35 minutes due to appeals from Bradford and Brighouse players, the final score stood 13-11 after a league meeting decided the outcome.

In all the First world war lasted 4 years 3 months and 2 weeks, more than 9 million combatants and 7 million civilians died as a result of the war, a casualty rate exacerbated by the belligerents' technological and industrial sophistication and tactical stalemate it was one of the deadliest conflicts in history, paving the way for major political changes, including revolutions in many of the nations involved. It also endured the bloodiest battle in its history the Battle of the Somme, an anglo French offensive which ran from July to November 1916 the British Army suffering huge losses 57,470 casualties including 19,240 dead on the first day. The entire Somme offensive cost the British Army 420,000 casualties, the French suffered another 200.000 casualties and the German forces an estimated 500,000.

It should also be worth remembering  how Bradford as a city also contributed to the war effort. Listers mill were producers of silk shell linings and many other firms too across the city either directly or indirectly involved in the manufacture of munitions from picric acid, shell casing to actually filling the shell. Also with casualties without going to war was the munitions factory at Low Moor on 21st August 1916 the explosion could be heard as far away as York, 38 were killed and hundreds injured. It was also in a 2nd explosion that 2 Fireman from the Odsal station were crushed to death under a wall that fell over whilst connecting hoses. Most of all we shall we never forget those that fought so bravely for our country and freedom we will never forget, for those who lost there lives, for those that suffer with every day memories that haunt them, for those crippled due to the effect of war, we will never forget.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn,
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
                                We will remember them.

Weekly Recap

It's that time of the year again where speculation and rumours fly about, yes that's right its the off season.
Although people think not a right lot goes on and the players just go on holiday or have a week or two on the booze, that is not the case at the bulls.
Just last week the boys ( or most of the them) headed back to the newly painted Tong training ground for the pre-season training.

This year the lads enjoyed a bonding session by tackling a local fly-tipping hot spot after tackling a 25 mile trek along the Leeds-Liverpool canal.
The lads then helped to rid the fly-tipping hot spot of old window frames and car tyres and cutting down bushes and hedges.
Such was the hard work that the squad and members of the local community filled a large skip and over 20 bags in just under 2 hours leaving the area pristine.
Well that's one way to start the pre-season and can only serve a great purpose in the gelling of the lad's.
To read more on this story and see pics of the lads clearing rubbish then please CLICK HERE

One bit of bad news is that Mark Offerdahl who was initially offered a one year deal has now been withdrawn. Due to a reoccurring injury, Mark was not able to make pre-season training so is now not a member of the squad. Mark is still registered with us and if he can prove his fitness he could be re-signed in the future but the bulls are in no rush.
On the back of all this are exclusive interviews with our new signings on the official bulls website all very positive with the lads raring to go. You can read the interviews HERE

The bulls Big One Lottery is looking for new members. You can join the many winners by signing up to the lottery online on the bulls website. The latest winner's are HERE

In other news

We can reveal that we have secured an interview with ex bull, Wayne Godwin. Please send your questions to us via Twitter, Facebook or via email to bullieve@hotmail.co.uk for your question to be put to Wayne himself. One rule is, NO personal questions I.E about personal life etc.
Get your questions in BEFORE 10pm SUNDAY night please.

With the recent Grand Final having just taken place and being slightly overshadowed by certain, events we thought it may be nice to look back at one of our own Grand Finals, which can you believe is over 10 years ago.  Time certainly passes by quickly and who would have thought that we would face life in the championship all those years ago. So here's a quick look back at the final of which the mighty Bulls were the all conquering side in every competition of this year.

Bradford Bulls became the 1st team of the modern era to complete the treble in 2003 of all domestic honours, Super league Shield, Challenge Cup and the Grand Final. Of course who can fail to remember the Challenge cup when actually possibly the biggest talking point turned out to be Sinfield from the Rhinos not taking the 2 which would have tied the game at 22-22. It also completed the first "treble" for the Bulls  as they are the only club to win the Challenge Cup in 3 different countries. However that was the start of the Bulls incredible year. Bradford finished top of the pile by the time the domestic season had finished and had the luxury of a weeks rest before once again facing arch rivals Leeds Rhinos in amazingly the 5th time in the same season. Once again the sheer power, pace and pure strength of the Bulls were just no match for our neighbours and a 30-14 victory ensured another visit to Old Trafford.

65,537 packed into Old Trafford to see The Bulls on there mission for the "treble" with only Wigan warriors standing in there way. Wigan took an early 6 point advantage but it was Bradford who clawed there way back into the game with 2 penalties just before half time. After the half time break it was the Bulls who run away with the game, culminating in a typical Jimmy Lowes try at the end burrowing over the line with a whole load of Wigan defence in attendance sending the Bulls fans into raptures. The game finished 25-12 with the other scorers being Stuart Reardon, Shontayne Hape, once again Paul Deacon was instrumental with the boot. The Harry Sunderland winner being Stuart Reardon. Not failing to mention the Wigan tries coming from Danny Tickle and Kris Radlinski, conversions Andy Farrell (2).

2004 started in similar fashion to how 2003 ended with the Bulls demolishing Australian side and NRL Champions Penrith Panthers 22-4 at the then Mcalpine Stadium. Since Reardon's heroics in the  Grand final he has now gone onto become a hugely successful model and has featured on the cover of a few books one in particular Raced which is a contemporary novel by K.Bromberg. There is a pic for the lady readers below. We hope you like.

Here are the team line ups from that very final

                                                                   Bradford Bulls

                                                                     Wigan Warriors

Here is Stuart Reardon on his new venture as a model. One for the Ladies.
